Honor Flag Recipients
The Honor Flag: Celebrating What It Means to Be a Knight
The Honor Flag is a meaningful schoolwide tradition that recognizes students, faculty, and staff who exemplify one or more of the Ellington High School values outlined in The Journey to Knighthood. More than an award, the Honor Flag is a visible and living symbol of the behaviors, character, and commitments that define our school community.
Each month, nominations are submitted by students and staff, elevating voices across the building and reinforcing a shared understanding of what it means to lead with integrity, respect, and care for others. From these nominations, one honoree is selected based on the quality and impact of the nominations received, ensuring that recognition is grounded in authentic contributions to our school’s culture and climate.
Honorees are surprised with no advance notice. They are called to the Main Office and welcomed into a moment of collective celebration. Surrounded by peers, educators, administrators, and invited family members, the honoree is recognized during an all-school announcement and ceremony, reinforcing that excellence, kindness, leadership, and service are values we celebrate publicly and intentionally.
The Honor Flag then flies proudly for the month, serving as a daily reminder that belonging, character, and contribution matter at Ellington High School. Through this tradition, we strengthen connections, affirm identity, and create a school environment where individuals feel seen, valued, and inspired—laying the foundation for both personal growth and academic success.
Honor Flag Coverage: Capturing Moments of Belonging and Recognition
Students in the TV/Video Production and Photography classes play a vital role in documenting the Honor Flag Ceremony, transforming a meaningful school tradition into a powerful, lasting record for families and the EHS community.
This work is an authentic, recurring performance task in which students apply the technical, creative, and collaborative skills developed in the classroom to a real-world project that occurs monthly. Students plan coverage, operate cameras, manage audio, and make intentional artistic decisions while working in a live, unscripted environment that requires professionalism, discretion, and adaptability.
Video production students capture the ceremony in a way that preserves the authenticity of the moment, documenting reactions and emotions as they unfold. Photography students focus on both candid moments and formal portraits, creating a comprehensive visual narrative that honors the individual, their family, and the broader school community.
Beyond technical skill development, this project reinforces one of the most important elements of school success: belonging. By capturing and sharing these moments of recognition, students help tell the story of a community where individuals are seen, valued, and celebrated.
The Honor Flag project directly supports our school’s culture and climate goals by:
- Strengthening connections between students, families, and staff
- Preserving meaningful traditions that reinforce shared values
- Providing students with an authentic audience and purpose for their work
Through this ongoing work, students experience how their learning extends beyond the classroom—contributing to a school environment where identity, connection, and academic rigor come together to create meaningful impact.
